Nine seals have tested positive for rabies around Cape Town, South Africa, and surfers are swimming scared. Just last month, one seal bit several surfers in a matter of minutes. Scientists are sequencing the virus to try to figure out how rabies entered the seal population. Before 2021, there had only been one case of a seal contracting rabies in 1980. Any surfer or swimmer bitten by a seal is encouraged to seek medical care. So far, none of the surfers who were bitten by infected seals were infected themselves. (The Guardian)
